We believe independence should not be rushed or 'expected'. Independence takes 'small steps', 'small bites' and needs to be nurtured and supported.  Change occurs when individuals are not pressured into signing up for a course they may never complete. Therefore, One Bite at a Time  delivers a 10 week session program. Each week skills are build upon as they are practiced, however participants are invited to try a session and the door will remain open for them to return as many times as they wish. No questions, no pressure, no failure, no shame.

Through community engagement, participants learn to work together in a hands on environment where communication, cooperation, and shared responsibility are essential. Each session becomes an opportunity to practice real-life skills—listening, supporting one another, sharing, turn taking,  planning, problem-solving, and celebrating successes as a group. This aligns with the program's mission to empower independence and build self confidence.

As young people step into the session they try new skills and realize what they’re capable of. As they follow recipes, make decisions, and overcome small challenges, they begin to see their own progress. Through community engagement, successes—big or small—is celebrated, helping them feel proud of their efforts. Even mistakes become learning moments that contribute to empowering independence, building resilience and self-belief.

Conversations spark during each session building the confidence to speak up, share our thoughts, opinions, feelings and our story.

In the kitchen, participants take responsibility for their own tasks—prepping ingredients, following recipes, managing time, and cleaning up. Each step encourages them to make decisions, problem-solve, and trust their own abilities. These experiences, supported by staff in a safe space,  empower independence and help participants feel more capable in everyday life.
